Planning the ultimate road trip can be a web of decisions. What route to take? What activities to include? Even which people to take…
To help inspire your road trip to-dos (and to-do-nots) we have compiled this list of the best ten road trip movies of all time.
Goodbye Pork Pie
Before Peter Jackson and lord-of-the-you-know-what, this low budget flick proved New Zealanders could make blockbusters. Two Kiwi blokes lead the police on a chase across the country in a stolen yellow Mini.
The Motorcycle Diaries
You might recognise the name of one these characters, as he starred in a couple of other well known events, the Cuban Revolution for example. Yes, before Che Guevara became a Marxist guerilla commander he and his pal Alberto rode a motorbike across South America. His diary of the trip is the basis of this movie.
Thelma and Louise
You can’t name a more iconic road trippin’ duo than these glamorised murder women. Starring Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon and a 1966 Thunderbird convertible, their legendary “road trip” (read: evading police capture) is, well, legendary.
We’re the Millers
What do you get when you combine a middle aged, low level drug dealer, a stripper, a teen runaway and a lonely 18-year-old? The perfect fake family to help peddle drugs across the Mexico/US border in a campervan of course.
A motorcycle ride across America in the swinging ‘60s. Yes the two main characters are bikers carrying a stash of drug money, but the film also explored important societal issues such as racism, the hippie movement and drug use. Also their bikes are really cool.
Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion
It’s been 10 years since Romy and Michelle left high school. Embarrassed by their achievements – or lack of – they spend their road trip concocting an elaborate lie to impress their former classmates.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Crossdressing as they crisscross the Australian outback to perform in drag, this cast of blokes offer a very unique road trip-themed movie experience. In their colourful bus (named Priscilla) the three queens take the desert by storm.
Before the invention of Snapchat/smartphones in general, which would have killed the whole concept of this movie, the protagonist accidentally sends his long distance girlfriend a video of him cheating on her. So along with three college buddie, he tries to race the mailman to her university.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Two men (one of them played by Johnny Depp) live their hedonistic dreams on a road trip across the Mojave desert from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. After taking a lot (like, a lot) of drugs, they also drive back again.
Little Miss Sunshine
Quirky and dysfunctional, this weird and wonderful family’s trip inside a VW bus to a junior beauty pageant is one of the great road trip movies. The Hoover family, with their adorable daughter played by Abigail Breslin, really do put the “fun” in dysfunctional.
