So…you’ve picked up your rental vehicle (from Snap Rentals of course!), and you’re ready to hit the highways and explore all that this amazing and diverse country has to offer. There are some really great web sites, providing different types of information, that can help to make your time in New Zealand even better! Here are some that are well worth a look.
www.nzta.govt.nz is the web site for the New Zealand Transport Authority. When you go to the homepage, you’ll see a section called ‘Travel Conditions & Information’. This provides up-to-date information on road closures, potential delays, potential hazards, traffic bulletins, and a whole lot more. You can use the information to have a look at where you are intending to travel, and make sure there are no issues along your intended route. Road closures aren’t that common, but in particular parts of the country there can be issues with this. For example, the road through the Haast Pass, on the west coast of the South Island, can sometimes be closed at night because of potential risks of rock falls. This means you have to be through the Pass by a certain time prior to sunset, otherwise you’ll need to wait until the next day. This could disrupt your travel plans, so it’s best to be ‘in the know’!
www.aatravel.co.nz is a site operated by the New Zealand Automobile Association. The site provides good information on accommodation options, and what to see and do around the country. It also provides a time and distance calculator, so that you can get an accurate indication of how long it’s going to take you to drive from one destination to another. You just select your starting point and destination, and up comes an indication of distance and time. This is really useful to know. New Zealand is a big country, and often tourists underestimate just how long it’s going to take to get from one place to another. So if you have a good idea on the distance and time, it can help you to plan your travel more effectively.
www.newzealand.com is the official site for Tourism New Zealand. On the home page, if you click on ‘Holiday With Us’, you’ll get lots of information on destinations, things to do, interesting facts, recommended trips, accommodation, and much more, and it’s ‘100% Pure New Zealand’!
www.travelbug.co.nz provides a comprehensive choice of accommodation options all over New Zealand. Accommodation costs can be a big part of your travel budget, so the more you can save the better! This site always has plenty of options, different types of accommodation, and great deals, so it’s well worth checking out!
www.bbh.co.nz is a site that concentrates on backpacker and hostel accommodation throughout New Zealand, and with over 260 listings, is by far the most comprehensive guide to lower-budget accommodation options. There’s a BBH club card that you can get, which gives you even better rates, and a really good free downloadable App for both iphones and Android. New Zealand has an international reputation for some of the best value and friendliest budget accommodation options in the World…experience it for yourself!
www.eventfinder.co.nz gives you all sorts of information on events that are going on around the country. Events are divided into a number of different categories, including concerts and gigs, exhibitions, festivals, performing arts, and sports and outdoors. It’s a great way to check on what’s happening, wherever you are in New Zealand. In Auckland alone, the site will normally have over 2,000 listings of separate events!
www.nz.com is a great site to visit to help you plan what you want to do while you’re here. It includes a really awesome ‘virtual tour’ of the country, and has a unique and comprehensive ‘New Zealand Slide Show’ feature, covering over 30 destinations from Kerikeri in the far north, to Stewart Island in the far south. It’s a visual feast, and well worth a look!
Hopefully these sites will be of interest, and help to make your New Zealand experience even more fun! It’s such a diverse country, with so much to see and do. If you can’t have a great time here, you’re just not trying hard enough! Enjoy!
