ECO FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION IN OTAGO

There’s no doubt the Otago region is a wildly beautiful place, and we’re sure that just like the people who live there, you’ll be keen to keep it that way! That’s why we’ve sorted your eco-friendly accomodation for you, because being kind to the planet doesn’t always mean camping in sub zero temperatures!

Hereweka Garden Retreat Otago Peninsula, Dunedin

Nestled in the Otago Peninsula, Hereweka is the ideal choice for those wanting some time out in a tranquil environment, there’s no traffic or sirens or deadlines to bother you here. Self-contained accommodation means you can come and go as you like, and the organic breakfast hamper delivered to you means there’s no rush to leave this peaceful little retreat. Just 30 minutes drive from Dunedin, this Hereweka boutique accommodation has been built with sustainable materials and looks out over some of the last remaining valleys of native forest on the Otago Peninsula.

Noah’s Accommodation Moeraki

For hospitality that really does feel like a home away from home, Noah’s Accommodation really does take the cake. Run by locals Leonie and Bruce, you’ll be welcomed into the comfortable, self-contained studio unit where you’ll marvel over the picturesque view over Moeraki beach (and those mind-boggling boulders). A great place for wandering, thinking and generally taking it slow, Moeraki offers visitors the chance to go fishing, boating, walking or for the wildlife fans, checking out the penguin and seal colonies along the coast.

Tayler Point Dowling Bay

Well worth the trip out to Dowling Bay (which sits between Port Chalmers and Aramoana), Tayler Point is a friendly, relaxed place to call home for a few nights. Run by an Otago University professor and a visual artist, the duo go out of their way to make sure you feel safe, comfortable and well looked after. They also grow their own garden produce, raise grass fed lamb, and pluck the eggs straight from their happy hens to put on your breakfast plate. Fancy a soak? The hot tub on the deck fits as many as six people, and makes for an ideal spot to watch the stars that remain pristine from the lack of city lights nearby.

Wedderburn Cottages Maniototo

For a night’s stay in somewhere with plenty of history, you can’t go past Wedderburn Cottages. Based in Maniototo, right in the heart of the harsh but beautiful Central Otago region, you’ll be looked after by the Duncan family – a fourth generation farming family from the area. Perfectly placed for the Rail Trail riders at exactly the halfway point, means you’ll likely see plenty of keen cyclists while you’re here. Choose from the homestead lodge or the self-contained cottages and put your feet up amongst tussock country where rural landscape and historic villages should inspire plenty of ‘lost in thought’ moments.
