Stewart Island sits off the South Coast of the South Island, and you’d probably be surprised how big it is…1,850 square kilometres in total – that’s nearly twice the size of Auckland City! – with 85% of the Island comprising the Rakiura National Park.

Stewart Island is renowned for its clear, clean waters, lush rainforest, sweeping sandy beaches, an amazing variety or flora and fauna, and unspoilt natural beauty. It’s really easy to get there – just one hour by ferry from Bluff, or 20 minutes by air from Invercargill Airport.

There’s all sorts of activities to experience once you’re there. There are a number of scenic walks, catering to all ages and fitness levels, ranging from 10 minutes leisurely strolls to half or whole day options. If you’re really keen, you can do the Rakiura Track, 32 kms total distance, and able to be comfortably walked in three days.

If you’re a hunting enthusiast, Stewart Island offers the only readily accessible herd of Virginian White-tail deer in the Southern Hemisphere. Permits are required, and must be applied for in advance.

If you prefer your action on the water, there are many diving, kayaking and fishing options available. There are also a number of operators offering sea cruises of all shapes and forms. You can take half-day or full-day cruises on a jet boat, or really live it up in style taking a 3-7 day cruise on a 32 berth replica sailing ship!

There are over 25 accommodation options on the Island, so you’ll easily find one to suit your style and budget. From backpackers, to bed and breakfast home-stay, self-contained cottages, and 4-star luxury lodges and motels, Stewart Island has it all covered!
